Since 1971, Go Ask Alice was pushed as “a real diary” by a teenage girl who died from a drug overdose. Only years later did the truth start to emerge.

The “editor” of the diary was Beatrice Sparks. But she also got royalties from the book. Royalties? How odd. Editors rarely receive royalties. Authors earn royalties. Sparks is now believed to be a serial hoaxer.
